The number of patients with infection or colonization due to carbapenemase-producing enterobacteriaceae (CPE) in South Korea had increased since 2010, after the identification of the first imported case from India. Not only the number of cases but also the incidence of CPE outbreak has increased, making it a recent public health issue of South Korea.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been undertaking a total surveillance system for carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE) since June 2017, expecting a more effective infection control of CRE. Herein, we ddescribe the epidemiological characteristics of CPE in South Korea in order to provide information for medical institutions to be prepared for infection control strategies.
